Roots Magic is a Rome-based Italian quartet that explores a repertoire between avant garde blues and creative jazz, an American-inspired jazz heavily influenced by Julius Hemphill, John Carter and Sun Ra.
The name of the group is inspired by the book "Hoodoo Herbs and Roots Magic", a kind of manual on herbs and roots used in the magical tradition in the south of the United States.
Their music incorporates the black music tradition, the country blues of the 1920s, originally intended for voice and guitar, as well as a more creative and advanced jazz side.
On one hand, it transforms the blues of Charley Patton, Blind Willie Johnson, Geeshie Wiley and Robert Johnson, on the other, revisits the inventive jazz of Julius Hemphill, John Carter, Marion Brown, Olu Dara, Phil Cohran, Sun Ra, Roscoe Mitchell, Henry Threadgill or Pee Wee Russell.
Roots Magic edited their works through the Portuguese label Clean Feed, the albums "Hoodoo Blues" (2015) and "Last Kind Words" (2017).
